Dr Juan Araujo

Dr Juan Araujo has been a member of the Sophia team for over three years. Some of you will have had the opportunity to meet him whilst others may wonder what he does when he comes for his monthly clinic session with us.

As a highly experienced Cosmetic Surgeon who works in several hospitals in Alicante and Benidorm Dr Juan offers a range of fillers, botox, minor cosmetic procedures and complementary consultation for our members who are interested in having surgery.

Dr Juan always takes time to discuss what procedures you are interested in and explains what will happen.

In the case of fillers and botox you can have your treatment on the day of consultation. Most fillers give instant results whilst botox can take several days to work fully.

If you want to have a cosmetic surgery procedure Dr Juan works with an English Coordinator who will contact you and make all the necessary arrangements for your operation so that everything runs very smoothly and you are fully informed about every aspect of your proposed surgery.

Dr Juan does the following procedures; eye lifting and eye bag removal, face and neck lift, nose reshaping, breast surgery of all types in both female and male, tummy tucks, liposuction, ears pinned back and facial implants.

If you would like confidential information on any of these procedures you can always contact Dr Juan's Coordinator and she will send you information on the procedure you are interested in and you can arrange to have your consultation here with us.

My Acupuncture Experience

My recent stroke affected my ability to sleep - So I turned to Fred Smithers for Acupuncture. Sophia's and Fred our acupuncturist have worked together now for 4 years and have an enormous amount of respect for each other. Many of you may have seen this gentlemen here on a Tuesday and Thursday.

During the last 2 months my brain was only allowing me to sleep for approximately 2-3 hours each night. At about 3am I would be wide awake and up and about and quietly doing some chores, hoovering the bedroom at this time did not impress Phil. By 3pm I was exhausted but frightened to sleep in case it affected my night time sleep. I spoke with Fred who said that acupuncture could possibly help. My first consultation was an informal fact finding session and looking at all the factors that could be attributing to my inability to sleep. Fred was incredibly knowledgeable and I found listening to possible explanations and reasons that my sleep was affected by the stroke fascinating. Fred recommended six sessions and but could not guarantee it would work, but felt hopeful it would make a difference. Did I sleep better that night? Yes. After the second session it took a few days, but I managed 3 successive nights of 8 hours uninterrupted sleep. I still have 4 more sessions to go, but it's looking incredibly hopeful. I have asked Fred to write some information on my treatment below:

The National Stroke Association says "A stroke is a "brain attack". It can happen to anyone at any time. It occurs when blood flow to an area of brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain such as memory and muscle control are lost." Paula has asked me treat her on the effects of her recent stroke with Traditional Acupuncture. She is a young and healthy person who should make a good recovery but any treatment should be done as soon as possible. Her symptoms include some speech and eyesight problems but her main complaint is a disturbed sleep cycle. My treatments involve using acupuncture to 'rebalance' her body energies to, hopefully, relieve those symptoms. As usual I make no promises but am hopeful of her getting back to normal. Over the weeks and months we will both keep you informed!

HAYFEVER SEASON - Some tips

For a start don't use an anti-histamine bought outside of Spain, they are targeted to different allergens and most likely won't help you very much unless you have a beautiful natural lawn and beech trees! The medication available locally is prepared for our indigenous environment (olives etc. etc.) so is far more effective. Speak to your local chemist and they will advise you. If you have acute symptoms or your breathing is affected contact your doctor.

On the days where the UV index and/or pollen count is high use a mask outdoors.

When ventilating the house do so before 08:30 hours and after 22:00 hours. If you have fly screens spray them with hair spray as this will collect a lot of the allergens and you can vac monthly.

Use a water spray indoors twice daily to keep the dust from circulating.

Wigs @ Sophia's

Sophia's with Melanie Smith our hair design stylist are launching our new wig service.

A person's hair is very important; it not only makes them look fashionable but also makes them look very healthy. If you lose your hair as a result of a medical condition or treatment then it can be devastating.

We can offer a personalised service including the customising and cutting of wigs in one of our private therapy rooms. Our wigs exceed all expectations and are natural looking, realistic in appearance, stylish and comfortable.

Melanie can guide you through the daunting but positive process of choosing a wig or hair piece which can be the same style and colour as your natural hair. Whether it be hair loss from chemotherapy, alopecia, lupus, male pattern baldness, scars, burns, transgender or purely for fashion purposes we are sure we can help.

Please feel free to contact us for a free consultation or further details.

Top Gymnast

Sylvia Mitry aged 10, Tilly Ketteringham aged 4 and Imogen Innes Bedford aged 12 were awarded top gymnast because Sylvia went flat down in the splits, Tilly produced a beautiful bridge and Imogen was constantly working hard and did a fantastic handspring flat back.

On Sunday May 3rd the club was invited along to a fiesta and, for many of them, it was their first time in front of an audience. They all did amazingly well but they have no time to rest as they are all now working towards yet another performance.

The club is getting excited because, in June, we will have even more equipment - asymetric bars, olympic size beam and new matting.

Good luck to Cetra in raising over 1000.00 euros for cancer support on June 2nd. Cetra is climing up Mulhacen which is the highest mountain in Spain. 3,478.6 metres!
